It was down to ten people as semi-finalists in the United Way of Catawba County "Win a Car" sweepstakes. Contestants from firms all over the County pledged the amount of one hour of their pay, for every month thru the calendar year. Ten semi-finalists were were chosen at random and got to try one of ten keys to the car. This is the fifth car in five years that Bennie Yount, President of Paramount KIA has given to the United Way for this contest. The Catawba County Chamber Commerce held a "Building Dedication" for the out going President & CEO, G. Daniel Hearn. Danny has worked in the Chamber Industry for 43 years and given 12 years of service to Catawba County. He also lead our chamber to victory over all other chambers in the US & Canada. The Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives has named the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce "The 2016 Chamber of the Year". In no small part to Danny's help and expertise. On a personal note, I've worked with at least half a dozen Chambers from Michigan to Florida and I've never seen any Chamber Executive who cared more, was more sincere or could hold a candle to Mr. Hearn. He's definitely a legend in the business. And because of it, has elevated the awareness of Hickory, NC and Catawba County. I remember the first time I met Danny, ten years ago. I thought, "Man, this guy is a real Pro!" He was ALWAYS in my corner, I count on him then, and now, for advice and deep background for my Audio Video Post Production endeavors and my nationally syndicated 3 hour weekend radio show, Pat's Country Classics®. It is because of Danny, that we tell my listeners that we're broadcasting from Hickory, NC and keep them updated on what our chamber is doing and implore them to join their local Chamber, as it is the last bastion of Capitalism. As the years go by, I'm proud to call him my friend and I send my most sincere congratulations. Danny 'you 'Da Man! Now take the rest of the afternoon off and hit the back nine. Hickory Patriots Day Ceremony, On the Square, Downtown, Hickory Hickory, NC. - 09-11-16
The Hickory "Patriots Day Ceremony" is always a moving occasion. This year we heard from two guest speakers: From the Hickory Police Dept., Master Police Officer John R. Wienbrock. Officer Wienbrock has been with the Hickory Police Dept. since 2008 and has had a military career with the United States Marine Corp. and the North Carolina Army National Guard. He spend a deployment in Afganistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with the 113th. Sustainment Brigade. He was awarded two Army Achievement Medals and numerous other medals and badges. - Captain Auton has been with the Hickory Fire Dept. since 1991. He has had a military career with both the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard and is currently a member of the North Carolina Air National Guard, where he serves with the civil engineer squadron in Fire Protection and Emergency Services. Auton has served four tours of duty, including deployments for Operation Desert Shield/Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and most recently supported air operations for Operation Freedom Sentinel against ISIS targets in the Middle East. The Society of Broadcast Engineers, Charlotte Chapter 45 met Thursday, June 30, 2016 at the iHeart Media Studio complex. Broadcast General Store supplied lunch and a representative from APT gave an interesting overview on their newest products name the Ultimate IP for Broadcasters. The new SBE Broadcast Engineering Handbook: "Hands on guide to Station Design and Maintenance" is now available and can be ordered from the SBE Bookstore. The Guide retails for $199 or a SBE Member price of $159. The SBE has archived the webinar, "Sharing of the 2025-2110 MHz Band Between the DoD (Dept. of Defense) and the Broadcast Community", which was held on March 03, 2016. the Webinar describes future sharing of the band by the DoD with Broadcasters and discusses the plan being developed to coordinate its use. The Hickory Air Museum, Welcoming Ceremony for VMAQT-1 EA-6B Prowler. - Hickory, NC. - 05-14-16
The Hickory Aviation Museum was gifted by the US Government, a new retired, VMAQT-1 EA-6B "Prowler" during the Welcoming Ceremony at Hickory Regional Airport this morning. The EA-6B entered service in September 1970. Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 132 (VAQ-132) became the first operational squadron, in July 1971 and flew its first combat deployment to Vietnam in 1972 on USS America. The US Navy phased out the Prowler in 2015, while the USMC expects to phase out the Prowler in 2019. While still relevant today, this aircraft will have been in service for over 45 years since the introduction in 1971. It's mission is to conduct airborne electronic warfare in support of Fleet Marine Force operations or other units as the Joint Force Commander directs. This includes suppressing enemy radar and surface-to-air missiles utilizing electronic jamming and High-Speed Anti-Radiation (HARM) missiles, as well as collecting tactical electronic intelligence in a passive electronic support role. Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Training Squadron 1 (VMAQT-1) is a United States Marine Corps electronic warfare training squadron consisting of EA-6B Prowler jets. The squadron is based at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina and falls under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 14 (MAG-14) and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW). The VMAQT-1 logo is the Banshee, an Irish Mythological figure foretelling death. It's motto is "Tairngreacht Bas", Gaelic for "Death Foretold". The, 3 & 0 for the season, Hickory Crawdads gave tickets to everyone one in attendance and the Chamber had selected food venders supply great tasting Baseball food, from Hot Dogs to beer. The program was aimed at both current Radio and TV engineering problems as handed down by the Obama FCC. Guest speaker was former Hickory resident, Carl Davis, Eastern Region Account Manager, Radio Broadcast Systems, ERI (Electronics Research, Inc.). Mr. Davis spoke on the "TV Repack" program and it's impact on ALL broadcasters. The Catawba County Chamber of Commerce held a Ribbon Cutting at the new Viewmont animal Hospital located right next to the new, yet to be opened, Publix Supermarket. On Monday April 25, 2016 Mayor Rudy Wright and his dog Reina, officially opened the new home of the Viewmont Animal Hospital. Joining in the ceremony were: Dr. and Mrs Gary Pope and Ruffin; Dr.Lysa Deaton-Smith; Dr. Melody Heath; Dr. Lorin Bilhorn and the staff of the hospital. Well wishers in attendance included: Dr. and Mrs Jim Peeples (Dr Peeples founded the Viewmont Animal Hospital in 1963); members of the Chamber of Commerce and employees of the David E. Looper Construction Company. In planning the new facility, Dr Gary Pope, owner, said the goal was to build a hospital that facilitated the delivery of quality veterinary care in an environment that would be visually pleasing to our clients and their pets. The color palette was chosen to be soothing and positively perceived by both dogs and cats. The reception area is divided into dog and cat waiting areas. Our cat guests have a quiet room with a large window that gives them a view from their condos. The suite area for our canine guests is adjacent to two outdoor exercise areas and a large play yard. The clinical area of our full service hospital includes 5 exam rooms, a pharmacy, lab, X-ray room, surgical and dental suites and prep areas to complement these services. The doctors and staff look forward to sharing their new hospital with their clients and their pets. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes presented: "Beyond The Game" An Evening with Dabo Swinney. It was a packed house of over 1100 people at Hickory Metro Convention Center. Coach Swinney is the Head Football Coach at Clemson University. He guided Clemson to the #1 national ranking in every College Football Playoff poll in 2015 and led the Tigers to their first National Championship Game appearance since 1981. It was the exemplification of Christian principles that earned Coach Swinney the 2014 Grant Teaff Coach of the Year Award presented by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the American Football Coaches Association Convention.
